Screen: Scandinavia

The Scandinavian film industry has achieved a remarkable diversity and depth in recent years, which is reflected in a series of impressive films. These films are characterized by strong narrative structures, in-depth character studies and an often dark but realistic depiction of life. Here are some outstanding examples from the recent past that are available on the Sooner platform. EDEN (2020), directed by Ulla Heikkilä, is a Finnish coming-of-age film set in a religious summer camp. The film explores the conflicts and challenges that teenagers face as they try to define their faith and identity. With actors such as Aamu Milonoff and Linnea Skog, the film presents an authentic portrayal of teenage insecurities and faith. Another notable film is HE'S MY BROTHER (2021), a documentary by Cille Hannibal and Christine Hanberg. The film tells the story of deaf, blind and autistic Peter and his sister Christine, who takes care of him. This moving tale of family love and devotion offers deep insights into the lives of people with disabilities and the challenges their loved ones face. IN YOUR ARMS (2015), directed by Samanou Acheche Sahlstrøm, follows the story of terminally ill Niels and his nurse Maria, who accompanies him on a trip to Switzerland to seek euthanasia. With an impressive performance by Lisa Carlehed and Peter Plaugborg and excellent camera work by Brian Curt Petersen, the film has been recognized at various festivals for its poetic narrative and emotional intensity. These films show the breadth and depth of Scandinavian cinema, which often deals with difficult topics with great sensitivity and artistic skill.
