Bernard Haitink was a renowned Dutch conductor notable for his long and distinguished career in classical music. He began his career in 1954 with the Netherlands Radio Union Orchestra and quickly established himself as one of the leading conductors of his time. His association with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, beginning in 1956 and becoming its chief conductor in 1961, was particularly significant and lasted until 1988.
