Bernard Haitink, one of Mahler's most gifted interpreters, conducts Mahler's "Fourth Symphony" from the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam with American soloist Maria Ewing. Written in the summers of 1899 and 1900, the text of the Fourth Symphony is based on a poem from "Des Knaben Wunderhorn" by Clemens Brentano and Achim von Arnim. Haitnik first led the Concertgebouw Orchestra in 1956 and became its principal conductor in 1963. Under his aegis, the orchestra developed considerably in the ensuing 25 years. Haitnik's Mahler and Bruckner interpretations in particular made a worldwide impression. The Concertgebouw Orchestra was founded in 1888 and, on the occasion of its 100th birthday in 1988, received the official designation "Royal."
