This documentary by Ruth Beckermann accompanies four 12-year-olds as they prepare for their bar or bat mitzvas - Wearing a Zorro costume or a designer dress. Solemn or smiling: crossing the threshold to the world of adulthood can take place in very different ways. "Thora lectures in Gangsta-Rapper-Rhythm" (Joachim Schätz, Falter Viennale Special) The film is about rites of passage: how these highly formalized ceremonies help in times of crisis or change, how they promote social anchoring, and how they reduce the fear of the new. Still and solemn, or laughing and rambunctious, at the Wailing Wall, or in the spotlight on a stage, wearing a designer dress, or even a Zorro costume: crossing the threshold into the world of adulthood can take place in very different ways.
