Led by Maren Ade, Peter Simonischek and Sandra Hüller play an estranged father-daughter duo and won German and European Film Awards for their performance.
Since the socially romantic old-68 Winfried doesn't see much of his daughter, who works as a management consultant in Bucharest, he decides to visit her spontaneously. He surprises her with joke dentures and sunglasses in the lobby of her company. But the visit does not lead to a rapprochement. Winfried annoys his daughter with tepid jokes and subliminal criticism of her performance-oriented life.
"Maren Ade's unique study of an estranged but mutually depressive father and daughter is a humane, hilarious triumph." (variety.com)
"A precisely observed, courageous, brilliantly acted, sometimes hardly endurable, but gratifying film." (filmstarts.com)
