In November 1940, while Spain is being crushed by the ruthless boot of dictator Franco, Pepita travels from rural Huelva to Madrid to be near her sister Hortensia.
Her sister, the pregnant Hortensia, wife of a guerrilla fighter and herself a member of the militia, is in prison in Madrid and awaits her execution. This is to take place immediately after the birth of the child. Pepita, in the meantime, leaves no stone unturned to obtain Hortensia's pardon, and she is fighting to obtain guardianship of the unborn child.
Based on the novel of the same name by Dulce Chacón, the film shows the fate of two sisters under the ruling terror regime, which was created in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War.
