Although Rio de Janeiro is only fifteen miles away, the Caiçara people had been living in isolation until the Brazilian government began threatening their way of life in recent years. Descended from indigenous Tupinambá Indians, Portuguese colonizers, and escaped slaves from Africa, the Caiçara live by hunting, fishing, and using sustainable agriculture. However, they are facing increasing pressure from real estate speculation and violent government intervention. "Mello's freestyle work, very much in the style of Jean Rouch, reflects the Caiçara way of life. No Kings is unique in its poetic lyricism and a reminder of yet another loss of an ancient culture to the greed of the profit-driven white race." (Filmuforia)
