Vandam is a hard-drinking, brawling loser from a housing project on the outskirts of Prague. With the advent of capitalism, his favorite pub also has to make way for progress. Lucka, the owner of the "Severka", must pay her debts to the sleazy upstart Milner or the demolition excavators will start to roll in. Vandam is not ready to give up his happy place. He takes up the fight – with the means he is familiar with. Vandam's story exemplifies all those who are overwhelmed by an increasingly complex world and could just as easily be set in Germany, Poland or France. "Štěpán Altrichter manages to dive into Vandam's milieu in a differentiated way and with an affectionate eye, even if he himself is trapped in rigid, old-fashioned thought patterns." (filmreporter.de)
