The documentary deals with the global phenomenon of trafficking in women. The stories of affected women are told by people who have no actual connection to the facts, but could have. Director Anja Salomonowitz chooses an original approach to her topic. The film is based on real stories of trafficked women, which the director has condensed into a documentary screenplay. Thus, the films constantly finds new connections between the narrative logic of cinematographic fiction, the “what could happen” and the documentary logic, the “what has happened”. The sequences are too constructed to be regarded a classical documentary scenes: every day life is transformed into something cinematographic. The people, places and situations, however, are real. They are not actors on a film set but people in their everyday surroundings. Thus, the surface of the images is penetrated by stories from the outside, which are recited as texts.
