Alfred Lion and Frank "Francis" Wolff, both German-Jewish immigrants, created the legendary jazz label Blue Note Records. Blue Note focused exclusively on American jazz music and developed a distinctive recording style and sound. They produced an impressive league of world stars in jazz music including artists such as Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter, Thelonious Monk and Quincy Jones. At a time when African-American musicians were still being discriminated against and marginalized in the U.S., Blue Note Records respected them as equals.
