After a 13-year-old Phillip disappears without a trace for a week and suddenly reappears, his mother Astrid and teachers are confronted with existential questions. Astrid and Phillip's teachers can only speculate about the reasons for his disappearance. What was he looking for, a surrender to nature, an approach to death triggered by the death of his father? Slowly, the normality of daily life begins to return. Phillip and his class are rehearsing a play by Shakespeare, Hamlet. Astrid pursues her profession in the Berlin art business, she buys a bicycle, she takes care of Phillip and his little sister. But she finds it hard to accept that her son leads a life of his own, that her influence is limited.
