Khaled, a young Syrian refugee, arrives in Helsinki as a stowaway. But the Finnish authorities want to send him back to Aleppo. Therefore he goes into hiding and stays in the country illegally. Wikström, a former flying trader, finds Khaled asleep in the courtyard of his newly acquired restaurant. Maybe he sees something of himself in this battered, broken man. In any case, he hires Khaled as a cleaner and dishwasher. For a moment life shows us his sunnier side, but soon fate intervenes. THE OTHER SIDE OF HOPE was awarded the Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlinale! «If you want cinephile escapism as far away from La La Land as possible, then Aki Kaurismäki – the great Finnish master of melancholy wit – is your man» (Sight & Sound)
