Director Michael Glawogger uses his biting Viennese to tell the story of tenants who are evicted from their homes, and the chaos and anarchy that ensues. There is an old apartment house in the middle of Vienna, inhabited by all sorts of forgotten souls: grumpy people, collectors, people with obsessions and hidden passions. When the proprietor dies, his nephew inherits the estate. His goal is to chase the old tenants out of the building with incessant little provocations. However, the tenants resist. Finally, no authorities are left, the building is nothing but a heap of rubble with half of its inhabitants dead, and those who are still lucky to be alive call a truce.
