The Austrian mini-series follows the dwellers of a fictitious village in Carinthia on the Austrian-Slovenian border from 1920 to the 1970s. Featuring Helmut Berger. Since the end of the war Horst Schellander lives in the mood of the victor. As Tito-Partisan he has risked his neck and is now waiting for his efforts to be rewarded. In the ranks of the KPÖ he fights for the cause of the Slovenes and counts on a "union" with the Slovenian brothers in Yugoslavia. The villagers deal with historical events like the Carinthian plebiscite of 1920 which fixed the previously disputed border, Austria's annexation by Germany and the war.
