In COWBOYS Tomislav Mršić transforms a successful Croatian musical into a dark comedy about a group of outcasts and a play at the local theater.
Partly social drama, partly farce, partly popcorn cinema, COWBOYS first became a hit at the box office then was chosen as Croatia's official entry for best foreign language film at the 87th Academy Awards.
Sasha is a theater director. After some success in the big city he returns to his hometown, an industrial village somewhere in Croatia. A school friend persuades him to stage a play at the rundown local theater. Unfortunately only five non-professionals who have never acted in their lives turn up for the casting. The only thing everyone can agree on is that they like Westerns.
"At first COWBOYS looks like a typical theater comedy: a group of losers/ retirees / problem kids are to perform a theatrical performance. In spite of all the hurdles, they pull it off and, surprise, surprise, the play is a complete success. Yet beyond the clichés, director Tomislav Mršić makes quite a funny film where the characters are sympathetic and not caricatures." (Neon)
