Danish soldier Esben returns to his family in 1917 after fighting three years in the First World War. But his hopes for a quiet life are not fulfilled.
Northern Schleswig's Danish population was forced to fight for the German Empire. The German administration took command not only militarily. The German officer Gerhard has taken up residence with Esben's family and mimes the surrogate father.
