The state-owned munitions factory in Chengdu is being closed to make way for a luxury housing project. Three generations of factory workers tell the story of change.
Under Mao, the munitions factories were moved from the coast and the densely populated east of China to the center of the country. Factory 420, for example, was built in the southern Chinese megacity of Chengdu. Aircraft engines were manufactured in this large state-owned factory, and an entire city district grew up closely with the plant. Now the factory has been closed and is giving way to an apartment complex called "24 City." Quite a few workers from the former company and their descendants remember.
"The stories we hear at 24 City belong to their specific place, but they are universal." (Chicago Tribune)
