Princess Roswitha has an accident with her carriage in the forest. A young nobleman helps her. However, she shows no gratitude. When she arrives at the castle, she is already awaited by a crowd of high-class bachelors. She is supposed to choose, but none is good enough for her, not even the last one, that horseman from the forest. She even mocks him as "King Thrushbeard" because of his strange beard. Roswitha is so hurtful that the king decides to give her the next beggar to husband who comes to the castle. It is a minstrel and she must follow him to his poor hut.
