Director Gerhard Klein began work on the film in 1970, but fell ill and died shortly afterwards. Two years later, his assistant Helmut Nitzschke continued the work with the help of scenarist and director Wolfgang Kohlhaase. The crime film is partly based on the case of serial killer Willi Kimmritz, who kept the people of Berlin and Brandenburg in suspense with his crimes in the years 1946-1948.
