Gustav Mahler - Symphony No. 3

Bernard Haitink, one of the most gifted Mahler interpreters, conducts Mahler's 3rd with acclaimed british mezzo-soprano Carolyn Watkinson and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. With six movements in two parts for alto and women's and boys' choirs, the "Third" is the Austrian composer's longest and structurally most unusual symphony. As in Maler's 2nd Symphony, the orchestral apparatus is similarly large. Bernard Haitnik first led the Concertgebouw Orchestra in 1956 and became its principal conductor in 1963. Under his aegis, the orchestra developed considerably in the ensuing 25 years. Haitnik's Mahler and Bruckner interpretations in particular made an impression worldwide.
