With his bizarrely unromantic and radically drastic reinterpretation of the ballet classic, the celebrated Swedish choreographer and dancer Mats Ek wrote dance history in the early 1980s. For the Swedish Cullberg Ballet - one of the most famous modern dance formations in the world - he interpreted the content and formal language of the two-act piece in a contemporary way. Mats Ek retains the music of Adolphe Adam. The premiere cast of Ana Laguna (Giselle), Luc Bouy (Albrecht), Yvan Auzely (Hilarion), Vanessa McIntosh (Bathilde) and Lena Wennergren (Myrtha) make this recording a first-rate ballet documentation.
