To feed his family, Antonio Ricci works as a day labourer in Rome. He finally gets a long-awaited job as a poster-gluer from a job agency. To do so, however, he is dependent on the possession of a bicycle, which he has only recently pawned. Antonio's wife takes the bed linen to the pawnbroker to get the bicycle back. So Antonio rides off, glues the first posters. His bike is stolen. The film is counted among the masterpieces of Neorealism. The film was shot almost exclusively at original locations, and most of the roles are also played by amateur actors in their own clothes. The film won an honorary award as Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards in 1950.
