The First Rasta

Leonard Percival Howell founded the Rastafarian Movement, was also sailor, world traveler, and revolutionary. The documentary follows from Jamaica to Panama, New York and Russia. Leonard Percival Howell aka "The Gong" took ideas from the bible, Marx, Eisenstein and Gandhi, uniting them into a new spiritual movement. The music of Bob Marley, Max Romeo, and others made Howell's thoughts and ideas world famous. He lived through Jamaican riots – first against King George, and later against global banana multinationals. The documentary also shows the burgeoning of the 1920's black culture in New York to modern day reggae.
