Nostromo

Olivier has been living alone on a remote island surrounded by the rugged Canadian wilderness for twenty years. The island, which was given to him by the First Nations, is situated 200 kilometers from Yellowknife, the only city in the Northwest Territories. Olivier has grown accustomed to life in isolation—but one day, three strangers arrive on the island and shatter his peaceful existence. NOSTROMO by Fisnik Maxville questions the dream of a solitary life in the wilderness and its limits. Is true contentment possible when you live only with yourself? Or do you need an outside perspective to truly recognize your own happiness? The film shows the fine line between contentment and self-deception, while the unforgiving Canadian wilderness provides the setting for an introspective examination of the human need for connection. The film premiered at Visions du Réel, where it won the National Competition Best Film Award. It was also screened at the Solothurn Film Festival, the Mostra Internacional de Cinema de São Paulo and the IBAFF – Festival Internacional de Cine de Murcia. Its impressive staging and existential theme made NOSTROMO one of the most remarkable contributions to the international festival year.
