They are politicians, they are East Germans and they are mothers. Anke Domscheit-Berg, Yvonne Magwas, Frauke Petry and Manuela Schwesig belong to different political camps, but in their everyday lives they face the same challenges: balancing work and family life, power struggles and successes, powerlessness and exhaustion. For the four of them, with their East German past, it was a matter of course to have working mothers – at a time when many women in West Germany were primarily responsible for the home and children. The fall of the Wall and the period that followed did not pass without leaving a mark on their families: collapse, uprooting, reorientation and departure. The contradictory experiences influence the political actions of the four women to this day. They are professionals with children, just as their mothers were. The challenges of their daily lives are similar, but their political positions, including those on women's issues, could hardly be more different. The documentary sheds light on the individual and collective struggles of these women in a male-dominated world, without shying away from their personal and political differences. Director Sabine Michel takes viewers on an intimate journey that explores both the public and private landscapes of these four women, touching on critical issues such as the women's quota, #MeToo and childcare. FRAUEN IN LANDSCHAFTEN not only offers insights into the political and personal struggles of these women, but also reflects on the role of women in today's society and the ongoing underrepresentation of women and East Germans in German politics.
