Whitney Bjerken from the USA is a world-famous YouTuber and gifted singer-songwriter. The quiet but sensitive Yara from Germany is one of her biggest fans. Connected by the glitzy world of social media and their passion for gymnastics, they begin to figure out who they are and what they want out of life. A coming-of-age film about success and loneliness, parasocial relationships, friendship and first love, queer coming out and the courage to find your own voice. The film accompanies over three years the emancipation of the two girls from what constricts them and tells with much sensitivity and always at eye level about their process of going their own way and finding their own voice. "ONE IN A MILLION is an inspiring documentary about growing older and the longing for role models. The impressive camera work by Lydia Richter, who also co-wrote the screenplay, creates a touching narrative with sensitive images. The film shows how YouTube and social media create a power imbalance and throws us back to the teenage years with all their challenges. Unbeknownst to each other, the characters understand each other in a deep way despite their differences. An impressive work about celebrity, fandom and the journey to one's own identity, carried by an outstanding visual realization." (Sooner curator Sarina Laudam)
