Dying in Ibiza (A Film in Three Summers)

In late August, 25-year-old Léna arrives in Arles where she is meeting Marius, with whom she had had a holiday romance. He's tardy. In the interim, she encounters Maurice, a seasonal baker, who introduces her to his pal Ali, an agreeable occasional visitor to Arles. Upon Marius' arrival, the four relish their spontaneous companionship and reunite the following summers in Normandy and Ibiza. The film embodies the charm of endless summers and whimsical romance with a vibrant, playful palette. It alludes to New Wave-inspired French cinema, showcasing youthful dialogues concerning life’s minor and major decisions - parenthood, sea adventures, or chasing love. Among the trio of boys, only Léna seems decisive. Reflecting Jacques Rozier, Dying in Ibiza holds a marine aura. The omnipresent sea, depicted in diverse blues from the English Channel to the Mediterranean, signifies escapades and fresh starts. Rich in authentic dialogue, the film subtly transitions from speech to song, with the daring trio of directors adopting musical vibes to express the emotional journey. Like Lena against the ferry’s rail “that never stops not coming back”, to quote a French tune, the engaging work peering towards the horizon is eagerly unveiled.
