That Most Important Thing: Love

The photographer Servais (Fabio Testi) falls in love with the unsuccessful but married actress Nadine Chevalier (Romy Schneider). Her mentally unstable husband Jacques (Jacques Dutronc) initially pretends to like the young and attractive photographer himself and to want to be friends with him. In order to be able to see Nadine more often, Servais secretly finances a play by the eccentric director Messala. In return, he demands that Nadine gets the leading role in the play. But the premiere is a rude awakening for everyone involved.
