Arash has had enough of France. He has studied here for five years, but now he is drawn back to Iran. His friends Hossein and Ashkan are convinced that he is making the wrong decision. So they pack up a car and persuade him to go on one last road trip with them to the south – a journey full of ease that ends in bittersweet farewells. On the road, between mountains, coastal roads and campsites, the three friends spend carefree nights drinking beer, making music and talking about the future. But while Ashkan and Hossein have long since found their place in France, Arash remains torn. When they meet the musicians Charlotte and Michèle, his decision becomes even more complicated. Should he really leave? Or is there something that is holding him? Maryam Goormaghtigh directs this semi-documentary film with a delicate blend of melancholy and lightness. Presented in the ACID section at the Cannes Film Festival, “Before Summer Ends” impressed with its unagitated, authentic narrative style. The film has also been shown at numerous international festivals, including the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and the BFI London Film Festival. “The technical credits are impressive considering the low budget, from Goormaghtigh's excellent cinematography to the sharp sound design and the beautiful music by Marc Siffert.” (hollywoodreporter.com)
