Based on the life of the German revolutionary Max Hoelz, Günter Reisch tells the story of the anarchist who returned home from the First World War. With an unbridled hatred of the capitalist exploitative order, Ignaz Wolz wages his own war against the rich. He robs them in order to give to the poor. He is admired and feared. In order to obtain weapons, he raids a police prison, releases the prisoners and meets his comrade-in-arms Ludwig again. Ludwig tries to channel the anarchist's thirst for action into revolutionary channels and does not give up when Wolz is arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment. Agnes renounces her bourgeois class and marries Wolz in prison in order to maintain contact.
