After his release from an orphanage, 18-year-old Peter tries to find his way through life. He goes to Berlin and joins a construction crew, but he is not satisfied. So he quits that job and becomes a driver. His new friends get him involved in criminal activities. His relationship with women is also complicated. Sabine, who loves him more than he loves her, is pregnant with his child. Peter, however, falls in love with his probation officer, Margot, who is in her mid-thirties, and experiences a brief period of happiness with her. Sabine withdraws from Peter and marries her admirer Christoph, but she is not happy with him and attempts suicide. When Margot learns of Peter's child and Sabine's love for Peter, she separates from him.
