An adaptation of the legend of King Oedipus, the film tells of the everyday lives of drag queens Eddie and Leda as they fight for the favor of nightclub owner Gonda. While Eddie's personal history is retold in flashbacks. A representative of the Japanese New Wave of the 60s and 70s, screenwriter and director Toshio Matsumoto was inspired by the French Nouvelle Vague, in particular Jean-Luc Godard. While, Stanley Kubrick cited the film as one of his inspirations for his adaptation of "Clockwork Orange." "Avant garde queer/proto-punk drama is simultaneously a product of, and very much ahead of its time." (Roger Ebert)
