With choreographers Toer van Schayk and Wayne Eagling, the Dutch National Ballet succeeded in a breathtaking new interpretation of Tchaikovsky's famous piece. In 1892 the ballet, based on E.T.A. Hoffmann's story, was cancelled after only 14 performances. Today, however, it enjoys great popularity, especially around Christmas time. Many companies stage the piece in their repertoire and interpret it again and again. Eagling and van Schayk moved the plot to Amsterdam in 1810 and replaced the usual Christmas holidays with the traditional Dutch celebration of Sinterklaas.
