Werner Herzog explores the myth surrounding Carlo Gesualdo, a 16th-century nobleman, murderer and composer who was musically far ahead of his time. Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa in southern Italy, is said to have brutally murdered his wife and her lover in 1590. In the years following the crime, he composed so-called madrigals, five-part choral pieces characterized by secular texts, dissonance and chromatic shifts. Similar sounds can be found only more than 300 years later by Wagner and Stravinsky. "A compelling portrait of a man caught between genius and madness, Werner Herzog attempts to approach him in a convincing blend of classical documentary and musical film." (filmdienst.de)
