Elevator to the Gallows

Florence and her lover, ex-paratrooper Julien, plan to murder Florence's husband, arms dealer Simon Carala. But Julien makes a fatal mistake. When Julien goes to clean up his tracks after the crime, the electricity in the building is coincidentally cut off and he is trapped in the elevator. At the same time, his car is stolen and Florence believes her lover has betrayed her for a florist. The melancholic jazz soundtrack was improvised by Miles Davis in one night when he was in Paris for some concerts. ELEVATOR TO THE GALLOWS was shot on the then revolutionary, extremely light-sensitive Tri-X film, which made it possible to shoot the iconic Champs-Élysées scene without additional lighting. The camera was moved in a baby carriage next to Jeanne Moreau, who plays Florence.
