Our Little Sister

In the picturesque coastal town of Kamakura, where the cherry blossoms herald spring and the sea laps in rhythm with the seasons, a quiet but deeply moving family story unfolds. Three sisters – Sachi, Yoshino and Chika – live together in their grandmother's traditional house. When they travel to the funeral of their father, who left the family 15 years ago, they meet their 13-year-old half-sister Suzu. They spontaneously invite the shy girl to live with them. What follows is a gentle coming together of the four young women, characterized by everyday rituals, shared meals and the quiet beauty of life. Director Hirokazu Kore-eda captures this development with a restrained, almost meditative narrative style that touches the audience deeply. OUR LITTLE SISTER (original title: UMIMACHI DIARY) is based on the award-winning manga by Akimi Yoshida and premiered in competition at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015. The film has received numerous honors, including five Japanese Academy Awards in 2016, including Best Picture and Best Director. Actress Suzu Hirose received the award for Best Newcomer. The film also won the Audience Award at the San Sebastián International Film Festival. With its empathetic portrayal of family ties and poetic staging of everyday life, OUR LITTLE SISTER is an outstanding example of Japanese arthouse cinema and a highlight for streaming platforms, delighting viewers worldwide.
