In her off-hours Séraphine painted pictures of her rural environment. Having only the scantest materials at hand, she created pigments from elements such as animal blood, oil from church candles, and earth. In 1912 Wilhelm Uhde (Ulrich Tukur), a German art critic and collector, discovered the self-taught artist's paintings while she worked for him as a maid in his lodgings in Senlis outside Paris.
