Hotel (Jessica Hausner)

Irene, the new receptionist in a hotel in the Austrian Alps, discovers that the girl she replaced vanished mysteriously. She wants to find her to escape her impending doom. Irene (Franziska Weisz), the new receptionist in a hotel in the Austrian Alps, discovers that the girl she replaced vanished mysteriously. When her search for answers is met with indifference and hostility from the other employees (including Birgit Minichmayr as colleague Petra), Irene becomes convinced that she must escape her impending doom. Jessica Hausner adroitly combines Hitchcockian suspense with Stanley Kubrick at his most claustrophobic, yet she consistently confounds any genre expectations and keeps the audience in a state of continuous disorientation. HOTEL screened at Cannes in the Un certain regard section. "A slowly, quietly and subtly told thriller that totally captivated me. The suspense, the thrill, the danger lies in the silence."
