Diahann Carroll was a pioneering American actress, singer, and model. Born on July 17, 1935, in The Bronx, New York, she broke significant racial barriers in the entertainment industry. Carroll gained early fame with her work on the Broadway stage and won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for "No Strings" in 1962. Her most notable television role came in 1968 when she starred in "Julia," making history as the first African-American woman to star in a non-stereotypical role in her own television series. The show earned her a Golden Globe Award and an Emmy nomination. In film, Carroll received critical acclaim for her role in "Claudine" (1974), which garnered her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. Other significant films in her career include "Carmen Jones" (1954) and "Porgy and Bess" (1959). Later in her career, she had a recurring role on the hit TV series "Dynasty" and appeared in "Grey's Anatomy." Diahann Carroll passed away on October 4, 2019, leaving a lasting legacy as a trailblazer for African-American actresses in Hollywood.
